Podcast Episode: Homelessness and Addiction
Monday Jan 27, 2020
Monday Jan 27, 2020
Today we are joined by two great Gentleman. We welcome Pat Cashell and Austin Pollard to our show. They discuss homelessness and addiction.
Tragically, homelessness and addiction go hand in hand. The end result of homelessness is often substance abuse, and substance abuse often contributes to homelessness. The National Coalition for the Homeless has found that 38% of homeless people are alcohol dependent, and 26% are dependent on other harmful chemicals.
In addition to suffering mental illness, homeless individuals suffering mental conditions are more likely to be victims of assault, further needing the comfort they temporarily find in harmful substances. Homeless individuals suffering difficult mental and emotional conditions may find it convenient to self-medicate with harmful substances as well. The combination of mental disorders and substance abuse is known as dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders. While it may seem that difficult mental conditions can be suppressed by drugs and alcohol use, this actually creates a destructive cycle of dependency.
We hope you enjoy this episode.

Podcast Episode: Forced Labour, Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking
Tuesday Jan 14, 2020
Tuesday Jan 14, 2020
Human trafficking is a crime that forcefully exploits women, men, and children. According to the United Nations, human trafficking affects every country in the world, but it’s not talked about enough. So we’re talking about it.
Trafficking involves transporting someone into a situation of exploitation. This can include forced labor, marriage, prostitution, and organ removal. This kind of exploitation is known by a few different names -- “human trafficking,” “trafficking of persons,” and “modern slavery” are the ones accepted by the US Department of State.
It’s estimated that internationally there are between 20 million and 40 million people in modern slavery today. Assessing the full scope of human trafficking is difficult because so cases so often go undetected, something the United Nations refers to as “the hidden figure of crime.
In today's episode, we joined by John Malcolm and Ron Toft where they discuss in depth trafficking and modern day slavery.

Many people consider committing suicide at some point in their lives. If you’re having suicidal thoughts, know that you’re not alone. You should also know that feeling suicidal isn’t a character flaw, and it doesn’t mean you’re crazy or weak. It only signifies that you’re experiencing more pain or sadness than you can cope with right now.
There’s no single reason why someone may try to take their own life. However, certain factors can increase the risk. Someone may be more likely to attempt suicide if they have a mental health disorder. In fact, over 90 percent of people who commit suicide have a mental illness at the time of their death. Depression is the top risk factor, but many other mental health disorders can contribute to suicide, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
In today’s episodes Jake discusses suicidal thoughts. He gives us steps we can handle our emotional waves that occur in our lives when we experience these thoughts.
Remember that problems are temporary, but suicide is permanent. Taking your own life is never the right solution to any challenge you may be facing. Give yourself time for the circumstances to change and for the pain to subside. In the meantime, you should take the following steps when you’re having suicidal thoughts.

Wednesday Nov 06, 2019
Have you ever felt like you are just going through the motions of your day, not fully engaged with your life? In today’s episode Jake discusses a topic that would need you engagement.
Take some time to consider what you value most in different areas of your life, relationships, work, leisure time. How might these values motivate you to take small actions, to bring you closer to living the life that you want today? How might focusing on these values help you do something new and step out of your comfort zone in some way?
Jake gives us some examples of parts of our lives that used to have value like, watching TV together as a family, waiting for either that new album or song to purchase to name a few.
Are we just going through our lives without intentionality? How is this effecting us in other areas of our live? How grateful are we of our experiences? We would love to hear your thoughts and input! We welcome your input at info@nogginnotes.com or info@zephyrwellness.org.
